Ascot’s Premier Sprint Renamed “Diamond Jubilee Stakes”

Ascot Racecourse is delighted to announce that The Golden Jubilee Stakes has been renamed The Diamond Jubilee Stakes to mark this important milestone in Her Majesty The Queen’s reign.

2012 also marks the 150th anniversary of the inception of The Prince of Wales’s Stakes and this year’s renewal will be run as “The 150th Anniversary of The Prince of Wales’s Stakes”.

“We are delighted to be commemorating The Diamond Jubilee by renaming the Golden Jubilee Stakes,” said Charles Barnett, Chief Executive at Ascot.

“All being well, we will be running the race with the world’s top rated sprinter, Black Caviar, representing Australia in what is historically Europe’s most international race, which would be a wonderful way to begin a new era for The Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

“We celebrated the 200th running of The Gold Cup a few years ago and this year we will be marking the 150th anniversary of Royal Ascot’s most important middle distance race, The Prince of Wales’s Stakes, which has been won by the likes of Rewilding, Vision D’Etat and Manduro in recent years.”

Ascot Premier Admission Customers to Receive Full Refund

Charles Barnett, Chief Executive at Ascot, said: “It isclear that we let down many of our Premier Admission customers with a wellintentioned but misguided policy, whereby we attached marks to those notcomplying with the new dress code. The intention was that customers who hadbeen advised once that a new dress code applied wouldn’t be approached a secondtime.

“The results were unfortunate, and no customer should beexpected to pay for such an experience. Therefore, we have taken the view thatall Premier Admission visitors on Saturday will receive a full refund.

“We have worked very hard for many years to establishourselves as a benchmark for customer service and are making this statementtoday to reinforce that we will not allow our reputation as a welcoming sportsvenue to be tarnished by an isolated lack of judgement on our part.

“We will work through the logistics of the refundstomorrow. Most people will have booked in advance or paid by card on the daybut we will look after cash customers too and anyone who still has theiradmission badge should hold onto it.”

Royal Ascot 2012 Dress Code

A day at Royal Ascot is very special and dressing accordingly is an important part of the experience. The dress code set out below is designed to help racegoers to dress appropriately for the occasion. Please note that a different dress code applies for each enclosure.

ROYAL ENCLOSURE

Ladies
Ladies are kindly reminded that formal day wear is a requirement in the Royal Enclosure, defined as follows:

Dresses and skirts should be of modest length defined as falling just above the knee or longer;
Dresses and tops should have straps of one inch or greater;
Jackets and pashminas may be worn but dresses and tops underneath should still comply with the Royal Enclosure dress code;
Trouser suits are welcome. They should be of full length and of matching material and colour;
Hats should be worn; a headpiece which has a base of 4 inches (10cm) or more in diameter is acceptable as an alternative to a hat.

Ladies are kindly asked to note the following:

Strapless, off the shoulder, halter neck, spaghetti straps and dresses with a strap of less than one inch (2.5cm) are not permitted;
Midriffs must be covered;
Fascinators are no longer permitted in the Royal Enclosure; neither are headpieces which do not have a base covering a sufficient area of the head (4 inches / 10cm).

Gentlemen
Gentlemen are kindly reminded that it is a requirement to wear either black or grey morning dress which must include:

A waistcoat and tie (no cravats); and
A black or grey top hat; and
Black shoes.

A gentleman may remove his top hat within a restaurant, a private box, a private club or that facility’s terrace, balcony or garden. Hats may also be removed within any enclosed external seating area within the Royal Enclosure Garden.

The customisation of top hats (with, for example, coloured ribbons or bands) is not permitted in the Royal Enclosure.

Children (admitted on Friday and Saturday only)
Girls (aged 10-16) should be dressed for a formal occasion. Smart summer dresses are suggested. Hats, headpieces or a fascinator may be worn but are not compulsory.

Boys (aged 10-16) should either dress in accordance with the gentlemen’s dress code (as set out above); or alternatively may wear a dark-coloured lounge suit with a shirt and tie (whereupon no hat is required).

Overseas Visitors
Overseas visitors are welcome to wear the formal National Dress of their country or Service Dress.

Serving Military Personnel
Serving military personnel are welcome to wear Service Dress or equivalent.

GRANDSTAND ADMISSION

Ladies
Ladies within the main Grandstand enclosure are encouraged to dress in a manner as befits a formal occasion.

Ladies are kindly asked to take particular note of the following:

A hat, headpiece or fascinator should be worn at all times;
Strapless or sheer strap dresses and tops are not permitted;
Trousers must be full length and worn with a top that adheres to the guidelines above (i.e. strapless or sheer strap tops are not permitted);

Introducing Yurituni: The Ascot Colts & Fillies Club Horse For 2012

Ascot Racecourse’s Colts and Fillies Club will once again have a horse in training for all the club members to follow during 2012. Yurituni, kindly loaned to the club by trainer Eve Johnson Houghton, will have over 13,700 devoted owners following her progress and cheering her on throughout the coming Flat season.

Yurituni

Yurituni is a five year old mare who has raced over the last three seasons winning five times. She is currently rated 81 and will be trained at the historic Woodway Stable, where the Johnson Houghton Family have trained and bred racehorses for over 50 years. Colts and Fillies members will be visiting regularly during the year to meet their horse and learn all about training a racehorse.

The Ascot Colts and Fillies Club aims to bring racing to a younger audience by making the sport more accessible, interesting, educational and fun. Current membership stands at just over 13,700 making it one of the UK’s largest sports related children’s clubs.

Eve Johnson Houghton

Membership is free for all children aged 16 and under and members are not charged for any of the special events organised. In addition to five dedicated family racedays throughout the year, there are stable trips, competitions and creative workshops for members to participate in.

During 2012, members will have the opportunity to follow Yurituni and the Club will be organizing several trips to the yard and the races to see her.

Dozen Entries For 25th Anniversary Of The Victor Chandler Chase At Ascot

FORPADYDEPLASTERER AIMING TO BECOME THIRD IRISH-TRAINED WINNER OF PRESTIGIOUS CONTEST

The prestigious £105,000 25th Anniversary Of The Victor Chandler Chase, one of Ascot’s premier jump races, is sponsored by Victor Chandler for the 25th consecutive year in 2012. This year’s race, which takes place over two miles and a furlong on Saturday, January 21, has attracted 12 top-notch entries.

Plenty of top-class performers have added their names to the roll of honour, with the great grey Desert Orchid famously seeing off Panto Prince to capture the race in 1989. The contest has also proved to be a good stepping stone to the Queen Mother Champion Chase, with Viking Flagship (1994), Call Equiname (1999), and Master Minded (2009) all completing the double in the same season - Master Minded is also the only horse to capture this race twice, after narrowly fighting off Somersby last year.

Forpadydeplasterer, a 10/1 shot with Victor Chandler, will attempt to become the third Irish-trained horse to win the race, but the first since it was promoted to Grade One level in 2007. The 2009 Arkle winner has not won since that Cheltenham victory, but he has run very well in defeat on a number of occasions since and trainer Tom Cooper was delighted with his third behind Big Zeb at Leopardstown over Christmas.

Cooper, who trains in co County Kerry, said: “You would have to be very happy with his last performance, but for making a mistake at the last he would have been bang there. We will definitely consider the Victor Chandler now.”

Cooper also suggested that Forpadydeplasterer will be aimed at the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March, but will also be given an entry in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has a tremendous recent record in the Victor Chandler Chase, winning the past three renewals, and this season he has entered the exciting novice Al Ferof (5/2), and Kauto Star’s half-brother Kauto Stone (6/1). Nicholls revealed yesterday that Al Ferof is his possible representative this year, with Kauto Stone probably waiting for the Grade One Betfair Ascot Chase on February 18.

Nicky Henderson said yesterday that he will be represented by last season’s Arkle Chase runner-up Finian’s Rainbow (11/4), who returned to action season with a narrow success in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton on December 27. Second and third that day were Philip Hobbs’ Wishfull Thinking (8/1) and Colin Tizzard’s Oiseau de Nuit (25/1), both whom could reoppose.

David Pipe claimed the prize in 2008 with Tamarinbleu, and accounts for one quarter of this season’s entries with Dan Breen (50/1), I’msingingtheblues (25/1), and I’m So Lucky (50/1) all engaged.

The Peterborough Chase winner Gauvain (7/1) has been given an entry by trainer Nick Williams, along with the runner-up Somersby (5/1), whose trainer Henrietta Knight is likely to make a decision on his participation nearer the time.

The entries are completed by Chris Gordon’s King Edmund (50/1), who won a handicap chase over the course and distance at Ascot’s Christmas meeting.

Ascot to Honour Recently-retired Lough Derg at The Christmas Meeting

Ascot Racecourse is delighted to announce that this year's Grade One feature on Saturday, December 17, will be run as the Lough Derg Long Walk Hurdle to commemorate the recent retirement of the Ascot regular.

Lough Derg ran 15 times at Ascot, and won on three occasions, most notably in the 2007 Long Walk Hurdle itself.

Lough Derg will lead the parade before this year's renewal of the Long Walk Hurdle a week on Saturday and his owner, William Frewen, will be present to select the best turned-out horse award before the race and to present the trophy after.

Frewen, said: “There can be little doubt that Lough Derg loved Ascot and that, judging by the receptions he received even in defeat, Ascot's racegoers loved him.

“While there were many wonderful moments, the highlight has to be the 2007 Long Walk Hurdle where a plan to test the stamina of outstanding horses such as Black Jack Ketchum, Kasbah Bliss and the dual Champion Hurdle winner Hardy Eustace was perfectly executed as Lough Derg was never really challenged and came home clear by nine lengths.

“It was brilliant planning by David Pipe and a great tactical ride by Tom Scudamore on a horse at his peak. For the owner, it produced a mixture of sheer astonishment and utter joy. I am so pleased that I will be able to be at Ascot with Lough Derg once more on Saturday week.”

Nick Smith, Ascot's Head of Communications, added: “We're delighted that Lough Derg will be here so that the Ascot crowd can see one of their favourites and say thank you for the memories.

“Win or lose, it was always a thrilling spectacle watching him try to put his rivals to the sword from flagfall - there is something about front-runners that everyone loves.

Ascot Racecourse’s Jumps Season Starts With a Bang And a Bump In The Night!

On Saturday 29th October, the 2011/12 Jumps season starts with a bang as Ascot Racecourse once again hosts the United House Group Day and Firework Spectacular, but this year the Family Raceday, has a distinctly spooky feel. The feature race on the day is the £100,000 United House Gold Cup Chase over three miles.

Away from the excitement on the track there will be a host of rides on the Plaza Lawns including where you can experience the thrill of the Superbowl and the Super Star, Gasp on Oxygen or join in with the spooky Halloween theme as you wander round the House of Horrors and of course a number of fun rides for younger racegoers.

There will also be entertainment from Uncle Doom and his Organ of Gloom, Baron Von Grindle has risen from the dead and the resident Ascot Witch will all be on hand as well as some horror make-up, all of which is provided free of charge. Children are also welcome to wear fancy dress throughout the raceday.

Following racing, with toffee apples and candy floss at the ready, Ascot presents a Charity Firework Display in association with the Ascot Round Table, so wrap up warm and prepare for a spectacular show!

British Champions Series to Apply For Race Upgrades

British Champions Series will be applying to upgrade the Group 2 QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes, won in fine style yesterday by dual Oaks heroine Dancing Rain, to Group 1 status next month.

Having surpassed the required average rating of 110 for a fillies’ and mares’ race for three consecutive years, the previous two when it was run as the Pride Stakes at Newmarket, the mile-and-a-half contest now meets the criteria to be considered by the European Pattern Committee for elevation to the top level.

An application is also likely to be made to upgrade the Group 2 QIPCO British Champions Sprint, won by the brilliant Deacon Blues, to Group 1 status as well.

“Yesterday exceeded our wildest expectations for the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day with such high class fields, absolute top class winners and a record autumn Flat crowd for the modern era,” said British Champions Series Chief Executive, Rod Street.

“There is a great deal for us to review over the coming weeks, but one obvious thing we would like to improve is the official status of the two Group 2 races and one Group 3 on the card.

“Clearly we would like to have five Group 1s and after yesterday I don’t think anyone could say that the day does not merit that.

“Whilst it may be difficult to achieve, yesterday’s ratings will have ensured that we made some great strides towards our goal and, as well as applying to upgrade the Fillies and Mares, we also hope that the Sprint might qualify for fast-track elevation given that it does not conflict with the five furlong Prix de l’Abbaye on Arc weekend.

“Different horses tend to run over five and six furlongs and there is considerable logic in having a late season Group 1 sprint over six furlongs as well as five.

“The Group 3 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup is much more difficult given the presence of the Group 1 Prix Royal Oak at Longchamp next weekend, but we would be delighted if it could achieve Group 2 status in the near future.

“Having had what are arguably the top two stayers in the world finish first and second yesterday, the same one-two from the Group 1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, we will have comfortably achieved the requisite rating for the race this year.”

“We are very grateful to the European Pattern Committee to have supported the vision that made yesterday possible and we look forward to working with them to strengthen further the overall autumn European Pattern.”

At The Races to Produce First Ever 3D Horseracing Feature for the QIPCO British Champions Day

At The Races, the dedicated racing channel available in 13 million Sky and Virgin homes, will produce and edit a groundbreaking 3D feature programme to mark the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot this Saturday. It will be the first time British horseracing has been filmed in 3D. The feature is a co-production between ATR, QIPCO and the British Champions Series.

The 24 minute film will be used as a centrepiece at a press and industry event to launch the 2012 QIPCO British Champions Series next year and ATR is also in talks with 3D distributors, service providers and hardware manufacturers worldwide about rights to use the feature.

ATR will use 3D specialist production partner, CAN Communicate, to shoot at Ascot on six 3D cameras. Each 3D camera will actually be made up of two cameras set up to capture action from different angles. Two sets of footage will then be displayed to the viewer simultaneously allowing the brain to determine depth and perspective. Bespoke rigs on the ATR production will allow for smooth zooming, something difficult to achieve in 3D broadcast. State of the art post production systems will generate maximum impact and feature-film quality.

ATR, QIPCO and the British Champions Series are also delighted to announce that legendary racing broadcaster, Sir Peter O’Sullevan, will record the voiceover for the film.

Queally and Dettori Battle it out for Jockey of the Series Title

DAFA set to benefit if either emerges triumphant

Direct Aid For Africa (DAFA) is set to benefit to the tune of at least £12,500 if either Tom Queally or Frankie Dettori is crowned top jockey in the QIPCO British Champions Series after the final five races are run on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot this Saturday, 15 October.

The Jockey of the Series will be presented with a specially crafted trophy and a cheque for £25,000 for the charity or charities of his choice after the final race, the QIPCO Champion Stakes, has been run.

Both are currently locked together on five victories apiece after the 30 races run so far, with Queally’s biggest contributor, Frankel (who has supplied him with three wins), looking his best chance to add to that tally in Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes sponsored by QIPCO. He also has the probable favourite, Vita Nova, in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes and star mare Midday in the QIPCO Champion Stakes.

Likewise Dettori’s biggest contributor, Opinion Poll (who has supplied him with two wins and a second place), appears to be his best chance to enhance his total in the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup which opens the QIPCO British Champions Day race programme. Dettori is also likely to partner the highly-regarded Dubai Prince in the QIPCO Champion Stakes and Meeznah in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes.

Queally currently edges the battle on the strength of his three second places to Dettori’s two, but a victory or second place for likely favourite Opinion Poll would take Dettori into the lead.

If successful, Queally would donate £15,000 to DAFA (Direct Aid For Africa), a charity founded by Newmarket trainer Barney Curley in 1996 to improve the lives of people in the Third World through a range of projects focusing on health care, education and self-help, £5,000 to the Jack And Jill Foundation, which provides care and support for children with severe neurological development issues in his native Ireland, and £5,000 for Save Historic Newmarket, which was formed in 2008 in order to protect and preserve the unique identity of the home of British horseracing.

Dettori would give £12,500 to DAFA and £12,500 to the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy, which helps young people with special needs to relate more successfully to others and have greater and more appropriate control over their own lives through an interaction with horses.

William Buick has four wins to his name and will be hoping to add to that with Gertrude Bell in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes and Nathaniel in the QIPCO Champion Stakes, but he has just the one second place and will therefore need two victories without reply from Queally or Dettori to take the inaugural title.
